I’ve read and liked some of Anderson’s writing for middle level readers, but I had no idea that she wrote for younger readers. This is a well-written and serious story for, I’m guessing, grades 2-4. She takes on a serious topic here – puppy mills – and throws Maggie, her protagonist, and her friends, right in the middle of it. Anderson perhaps underplays the school element (Maggie needs more than a tutor), and I’m guessing there’s more about the inevitably absent parents in the sequels. Good stuff, especially for animal-loving children.
