My Favorite Warlord (Gloria)

Gloria’s work first came to my attention when he was named as an Anisfield-Wolf award winner. It just took me a while to find his collection. I wish I could say I connected with it, but I always felt a bit outside of it. Some of my reaction is because of his allusions; in other cases, though, I thought I was just missing something that was lying there between the lines. There’s something a bit out of rhythm when it comes to his lines. Whatever the reason, not many of these poems resonated with me, except one of the last, “Trees as Soldiers March.”
