This award- winning (King, Newbery) novel-in-verse from Kwame Alexander lives up to its hype. Though I was wary of the beginning, the distinct voices of the twin brothers emerge as both dynamic and authentic, and I became immersed in this coming-of-age story that is about more than basketball (though that is why I’ve given my copy to a student – to see if I can ‘trick’ him into reading). Alexander explores identity (father-son, twin-to-twin, hair) and community (health) conflicts in this very teachable book. What age??????????
