I have never really understood the word novella, but if the cover says this is a novella, then who am I to argue?
I found this to be a compelling story – a kind of explanation of how a violent act can have more causes than meet the eye. Torday’s story accumulates force so that the violence here becomes as brutal as it was inevitable, and as inevitable as it was both necessary and right. There are no heroes or innocents here. Torday has chosen his details wisely. They all matter and help coil the tension even tighter.
I also enjoyed the Baltimore setting (having lived there for a while).
A quick glance at his website reveals that he’s got a new book out – The Last Flight of Poxl West. I’m looking forward to it.
