The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine (Khalidi)

Clear and impressively balanced, this history of the six declarations of war against the Palestinians details Israel’s colonialist mindset, the increasing bias of the United States, and the lack of preparation of of the PLO that all prevent any real progress from being made. And by ‘progress,’ I mean, any serious and sustained effort to secure a state for the Palestinian people. The US and Israel would likely claim that a great deal of progress has been made.

Khallidi, occasionally intermixing some of his own family history, keeps his prose clear enough for those of us with a limited understanding of the relevant history. I would love to know what exists by way of an Israeli response. Khalidi’s conclusions and suggestions seem spot on to me, but they are so ambitious (given the current climate) that they left me despairing for the future.
